Free forever QR code — what to watch for
“Free forever” is a powerful marketing phrase. For QR codes, the fine print matters more than the headline. If the free plan still routes every scan through the vendor’s short domain, your code depends on their business surviving — and on them keeping that redirect free.
Red flags
- Required account before download
- Scan analytics behind a paid wall (okay as optional; risky if required for the link to resolve)
- Watermarks that force an upgrade for “commercial use”
- Codes that stop working after a trial period
What actually stays free
A static QR generated in the browser with an open-source library has no vendor middleman. You download PNG/SVG once and host or print it yourself. That is as close to “free forever” as software gets.
When dynamic still makes sense
If you truly need to change the destination after printing (seasonal campaigns, A/B tests), pay for a reputable dynamic service with a clear SLA — do not rely on an anonymous free tier for anything you will print at scale.
